EDF Energy employees break fundraising targets for Breast Cancer Now

Customer services teams at EDF Energy, Doxford have raised a huge £30,176 for Breast Cancer Now, the company’s national charity partner for the last three years.

Breast Cancer Now was first chosen in 2016 as the company’s main charity partner following a national employee vote. To mark the culmination of the special partnership with the charity, local EDF Energy employees raised nearly £1,500 in a special fundraising finale at their Sunderland centre.

Overall, although the three-year partnership initially pledged to raise a total of £300,000 from employee fundraising –through a combination of fundraising by employees and the company’s match funding means the total raised is now more than £600,000.

Kevin Gatens, Head of Customer Service in the North East, said: I am incredibly proud of the consistent and sustained fundraising efforts by all employees at the Sunderland site.

“They have made a huge effort in raising as much money as possible for Breast Cancer Now and worked hard in developing exciting and engaging fundraising events to raise much needed awareness and funds for the cancer charity.

“It’s amazing to reach the third highest fundraiser spot out of all EDF Energy branches nationally and it’s a total credit to the ethos, commitment and passion of Doxford Park employees.”

Prominent fundraising events by the team at Doxford include specific staff led initiatives and awareness days.

For example, Sunderland team members participated in a sponsored skydive and the Great North Run, raising £2,170 and £1,290 respectfully. Also, Emma Henderson, a Prepayment Activity Manager at EDF Energy Doxford, with Louise Tyrell who works at EDF Energy’s Exeter site, raised an impressive £6,000 to trek the Great Wall of China.

Lizzie Israeli, Senior Corporate Partnerships Manager at Breast Cancer Now, added: We would like to say a massive thank you to EDF Energy and its staff for their unwavering support and enthusiasm throughout the last three years, in what has been a hugely successful partnership.

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. With 55,000 women and 370 men diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK, there has never been a more urgent need for our work.

“Thanks to the generosity and commitment of EDF Energy’s incredible workforce we can continue to fund world-class research to help us get one step closer to reaching our goal of ensuring that, by 2050, anyone who develops breast cancer will live and live well.”
